My Review 

The story begins with a crime scene wherein a big honcho Vikram Oberoi is murdered in his penthouse. Nobody knows whether it’s a murder or a suicide and soon the story progresses with the several characters being introduced such as Sonal Verma who has newly joined the company and has her eyes set on Vikram. He is regarded as a Casanova of the office. He breaks up with his secretary Aarti and soon begins an amorous affair with Sonal. His wife has no clue about his several affairs and she is as clueless as about her dead marriage life.

This is a story about love, lust, revelry, office politics, and betrayal. The author has depicted different emotions of a human being with several characters in his story as if to convey how our fleeting emotions can bring turmoil and trouble in our life. The revelry between two corporate giants like NexGen Technologies and Alpha; then Aarti and Manvi’s invulnerability towards Vikram and the soured friendship between Vikram and Ashwain – all these angles keeps the story somewhat entertaining but lacks suspense value. The end is almost predictable. The plot could have been better if the author wouldn’t have taken inspiration from Bollywood. The silver screen has injected us the revenge bug so badly that even the author couldn’t resist himself for adding that angle in the story.

After reading this novel, I realized how our men so weak when it comes to quick flings or one night stands. Be it Vikram, Agystya or Rakesh, the moment they are lured by an attractive woman, they feel weak in their knees. Again, it’s very disappointing to see Vikram is mainly stereotyped by creating his image as a Casanova. The women in this novel are shown as weak individuals such as Manvi. She is trying to find ways to please her man and instead, she commits a sin by luring a just-out-of-college intern and seducing him sexually. It is the idea of an author as the plot is mainly based on everyone’s weakness. 

Although the author has successfully managed to exploit human weaknesses by depicting various emotions, the story lacks the charm and suspense value completely. The author has taken every effort to pepper the story with lots of twists and turns. The plot has the potential to become a good motion picture if only the loose ends are fixed by the experienced directors.

Has Vikram got murdered or committed suicide? What’s the real story of Sonal and what’s her purpose? Is Ashwin the mastermind of this whole political game? These and many questions will be raised in your mind when you read this story. Till the time, I am leaving some questions left to you. 

I will recommend this book to those who enjoy reading filmy drama and a twisted love story. Find out more in this novel called ‘The Sinners’!

I liked the author’s writing style as he ends up every chapter with some loose hints for you to find.

Book Review 

The book opens with the scene of aspiring actress Priya’s suicide (at least it looks like though) but it takes you to enjoy the ride full of twists and turns. The author has taken a lot of effort to make each chapter interesting by giving vivid descriptions of various events. Priya is dead and Partha (Former journalist) is approached by Mohan Krishna’s family to help them solve the mystery of her death as their son is accused of murder. Now, Partha, Seema, and Harish are trying to solve this puzzle with their various tricks. Till the end of this book, you are forced to think who could be the culprit. The author has successfully maintained the curiosity of the murder as you keep questioning yourself about the murderer. 

You doubt the intention of each character from this story like Varaprasad’s sudden disappearance from the crime scene, student union leaders’ strange behavior and reaction towards Priya’s death or whether Partha and his team are genuine enough to unravel the mystery or are they trying to cover up for Mohan Krishna’s family. 

You will be entertained with every new twist in the story as you move on to the next chapter. A crime thriller from an Indian author brings a fresh breath of air in Indian literature! 

The Best Part 

The angle of the story is not something new but it is highly entertaining as the author keeps you hooked with his twists and turns. 

The Not-So-Good Part 

Very lengthy, unnecessary descriptions can be a turn off for readers! 

The Writing Style 

The language is simple and uncomplicated. Any reader can easily connect with the story.

The Review

If you have read the first installment of the Peshwa series by Ram Sivasankaran, I am damn sure your hopes were high as soon as the second book came out. And voila! What a masterpiece again by Ram Sivasankaran who has killed it with astonishing writing skills. Here’s what I felt while reading this book (at the same time, I am extremely sorry to write this review with extreme delay)

The story continues 7 years later in which Peshwa has defeated Nizam’s armies at Fort Mandu. Peshwa’s several victories have made him extremely popular among his armies as well as his people. By this time, he has proven his capability and invincibility as a soldier and true Maratha patriot. Apparently, everything seems alright in his state on the surface. However, scorpions have already begun their tactics by going underground in the form of riots, fire, and accidents in small villages. Peshwa knew it was scorpions who were trying to spread terror among common people. However, he did not know what to do. On the other hand, all his servicemen suspect Anamik (commonly known as Cobra) behind all this ruckus. Throughout the book, you will realize the real identity of Cobra is intact only to reveal at the end of a few pages of the novel.

This novel is all about unraveling the journey of twisted fates and intriguing mysteries. The author has left no stone unturned to weave this novel by blending with historical facts and his mind-blowing imagination. With his simple yet impactful writing skills, Ram Sivasankaran has created a masterpiece for sure. There are several reasons why should you read this novel:

Solely for entertainment    

If seeing a love story of Bajirao Mastani wasn’t enough for you and has always been curious about Peshwa dynasty, then you should read ‘The Peshwa – War of the Deceivers’.     It is an unputdownable book that you will regret if you don’t read it. The author has peppered the plot with a lot of interesting mysteries and has portrayed all characters so well- you can a whole plot in your mind. No, I am not boasting. I really could imagine each scene while I was reading this book. Bajirao’s intensity for his folks and mind-boggling tactics to win lands has left an indelible mark in our Marathi history. The author simply makes you swoon over this novel by his solid art of depiction when he portrays characters or action-packed sequences.

At one point, the story becomes intensely interesting that you won’t even want to go to the loo or take a popcorn break. It is like watching a movie on Netflix or something where you have an option to pause but you don’t want to. The chapter number 27 titled, ‘No Ghosts but the Ones We Made’ is extremely spellbinding as if you’re seated in a multiplex and a very mysterious scene is happening right in front of your eyes.

Mysteries after mysteries

Don’t we enjoy a mysterious sequence that seems never-ending and grip-tightening? We love the thrill. It’s that novel that will keep your bind with mysteries after mysteries. The identity of the younger brother of Bajiroa Peshwa, Chimaji Appa Bhat, doesn’t get unfold until you reach to the epilogue of this book. Then again, you have an exciting episode titled ‘The Second Son’ wherein the planning and plotting between Venkoji, Maharaja of Tanjavur and Pandit Kashiraj and many other revelations followed by their conversations will excite you further.

Characters

A true writer knows how characters play an important role in story building. The author wins full marks in depicting each character as you could imagine each role getting developed in front of your eyes. Be it Rasool, Aadil, Mastani, Bajirao or Chimaji, you’ll enjoy a surreal ride of these historical characters. In school days, we all know how history used to be a boring subject but turn a few historical pages into fiction and you’ll want to read more of it.

The book cover and the title both are apt given the story theme. The author’s name is enough that you’ll pick up and read this book.

Undoubtedly, this is one of the best historical fictions that I’ve ever written and I absolutely recommend this book to all of you.

The author Ram Sivasankaran, was born in Madras, India, but has spent most of his life abroad – largely in the Middle East and the United States of America.

Book Review

There are lots of mysteries in this world and the mystery about time is the theme of this book. Although I would have loved to get entangled in the web of mysteries this one I have surely not enjoyed.

The story is about an old watchmaker named Pedro. Since childhood, he was very much fascinated about watches which soon became his profession. He was famous in his city for his exquisite watches and his business has been flourishing ever since he has started. However, he has been seeking answers about the eternity watch which was given to him by the old man whom he met in Stonehenge. He has made so many watches in his life but he is unable to solve the mystery of this eternity watch. He tried to reopen and study the mechanism of the watch but all his efforts were vain.

He couldn’t get directions and he soon started feeling helpless. He thought that he would never solve the mystery of endlessly ticking of the eternity watch. But his granddaughter kept him asking questions that gave him a direction. It gave him zest to find the truth behind his mysterious dreams, about the old man and the watch.

The story keeps revolves around the eternity watch. The story’s beginning and an end also were as eternal as the watch. Even though the concept was intriguing but it failed to capture my attention. I couldn’t understand the purpose behind the plot.

The writing is extremely plain and simple. The concept was about ‘time’ and one if could see at the different concepts of time as time reflects many emotions of life, the author could have done it better by using descriptive and narrative writing.

I was lost in the concept as I couldn’t understand what exactly the author wanted to convey to his readers.

Time can indicate many things. Time is life. Time is money and time is a true reflection of our life. The author tried to end the novel by an unexpected twist but when I read the chapter wherein Pedro goes back to the same place when he was a child, I already knew the end of the novel.

Overall, the theme was great but the author failed to give justice to it. The plot was pacing with lots of loopholes.

My review

My idea of fiction is a story full of actions, suspense, and thrill. At first, the book cover did not stir my imagination. In fact, I did not sign up for this book but WritersMelon selected me for reviewing this book and I thank them for giving me this opportunity to review this book.

The first chapter of this novel gave a chill to me and I kept reading only to realize that I should not judge any book by its cover. Its an amazingly complied, written action-packed book written by Sum (the author has also kept his identity hidden which is also an interesting fact).

The Alpha Yeti depicts a struggle between good and evil. There are white and grey yetis who live in snow-capped mountains of Nirmalaya and there is a tribe of Kasis who are living in the Karyakunj village. Everything was peaceful until the group of mountaineers embark on the journey to discover mysterious mountain only to put the entire village in danger. The grey yetis’ boiling blood for revenge wreak havoc for villagers and they do not have enough weapons to fight against them. They soon lose the battle but the four eminent hunters from the west come to their rescue when Jai’s daughter gets abducted by one of the villagers. It leaves them no choice but enter in the vicious village cured by the deformed grey yetis.

Will they be able to rescue the village? Will Jai and Jai’s family reunite with their daughter? Will the battle with Alpha Yetis ever come to end or villagers will continue to live in fear and distraught for centuries?

The Alpha Yeti is a full of actions and adventures novel well-written by equally mysterious author ‘Sum’. The moment I started reading this novel, it had a firm grip on me. Every scenario gave me the same thrill and excitement as if I am watching Game of Thrones. I loved the idea of Alpha Yetis versus humans. It was quite refreshing to read something unique and adventurous after a long time. Yes, a few chapters did frighten me in the night as the writing stirred my imagination.

The life of Kasis is no fairy-tale. The beginning shows how white Yetis and Grey Yetis are no fictional characters but are real and how they are making the lives of villagers terrible. Alas, the struggle of villagers continues when the government fails to recognize its root cause. Every emotion depicted in the novel represents how humans’ actions cause disastrous reactions. They say curiosity kills the cat and true to this adage when four mountaineers try to solve the mystery of Yetis call trouble for the entire village. When they fail to solve the mystery and save the village, Mobhaji’s son Wurli takes the matter in his hand and abduct Jai’s daughter so that they could come to the village and save them from the evil Grey Yetis.

The story also gives out a message to us how our actions hamper natural environment. White Yetis live in harmony but humans known for troubles not only endanger their lives but themselves as well. As a result, it awakens the evil power of Alpha Yeti. The fight between four hunters and the Grey Yetis is exciting to read.

I liked the fact that the author never goes overboard when describing the characters, scenes and everything. It would have become more interesting if the author could have extended the plot as I felt in some places the author has rushed to complete the plot.

Overall, the plot is extremely unique, strong and powerful. It gave me the excitement of adventures that one would want to have it in reality.

Writing style  

The authenticity of the plot is maintained throughout the novel by using words like Bhirendi, Wurli, Boleain, kinsmen, donjon, bludgeon etc. it simply sets the plot as if it really happened in the village called Karyakunj.

The best part

The author’s writing style is simple and unique. The debut novel of Sum is very impressive.

Not so good part

Actually none. However, the author should have extended the plot a bit as it needs more pace to gauge the plot properly.

Ghosts! Aren’t they fascinating? No, not in a fancy, exciting way but they keep us enthralled, curious about them. Though till date many of us might have not experienced ghosts but they somehow manage to keep our lives intrigued. Don’t they?

And of course, they are some well-known writers who would not let us forget about them and then their writing keeps us hooked, make us extremely curious with their spine-chilling stories.

I read a lot! Back then I used to read a lot of Marathi and Hindi literature and now English literature has me engaged for all these years. That’s when I thought that I should also look back and refresh my reading skills in other languages as well.

And there I laid my hands on Ratnakar Matkari’s book and wow, what a book it is. I love spending my time reading books and this one has certainly entertained me, kept me curious. With every story, I got to know better of renowned author Ratnakar Matkari’s excellent story narration and I look forward to read many of his books now!

So here is my review of the recently read book – ‘Aik, tole padtayet! (A compilation of 30 suspense stories)

Those were the days when the authors had this unimaginable yet very simplistic way of writing which still made readers mesmerized by it. Same goes with Ratnakar Matkari’s book –

To begin with – Aik, tole padtayet is a classic story in which how an old lady keeps cheating her death by inviting guests at her bungalow. Every guest who hears clock ticking expires after exactly five days. The funny part of this story is when newly appointed auditor Mr. Pundalik spends a night at her bungalow and comes out alive. It’s because this time Mrs. Piroj could not cheat her death as Mr. Pundalik is hard on hearing. When you keep cheating your death multiple times, but there is a time when you cannot escape the universal truth of life and death.

Another suspenseful and hair-raising story that I really enjoyed reading was – Tarkar. Even after reading the last paragraph twice, I could not understand but I loved the suspense.

Every story has a different angle and the author smartly ends each story on a suspense note only to make a reader linger on it for some time.

Bandh, The heart-wrenching story of a couple who loses their only child in an accident and how their relationship becomes sour; Vacancy – agonizing yet intriguing story of people losing their jobs as well as life after one another leaves you spellbound; Haak – the long-distance relationship between a father and a son and how a father’s infinite bond helps him save his only child; Shevatcha Tappa – a very interesting yet painstakingly emotional story of Ramakka where she is on a deathbed but her death isn’t a normal one could think of rather she goes through every step of her earlier life and her demise is surprisingly shocking and Come on Rocky – is a spellbound story of Mr. Barde who lives alone with his only dog Rocky. The suspenseful death of a dog’s owner and his dog is something to ponder on and on.

Every story is beautifully weaved with equally suspenseful end makes you want to read more and more. Author Ratnakar Matkari does not disappoint you even in the last few chapters left. Prachiti is the final story of this impressive compilation that you would really enjoy and would think that the book should have more stories.

Yes, the writing is simple yet extremely impressive. None of the stories are boring or ordinary. Each story is unique in its own way. There is no dull moment in this book and one can easily finish it off this 215 pages of a book in one seating.

It has drama, suspense, emotions, and pain. The book also reflects human conflicts and emotions when it comes to relationships. It also encourages you to think before you take any hasty decisions about own life or relationships.

Overall, I liked this book a lot and definitely I am looking forward to reading more of his books.

The title is absolutely apt as we all know how the clock’s ticking plays an essential role in a horror story. The author also begins narrating the story that has this title. The tall bungalow with its eerie appearance justifies the compilation of Ratnakar Matkari’s suspense stories.

I reviewed this book for two reasons, one wanted to give my readers something different and secondly, I want to encourage people of Marathi origin as well as people who understand Marathi to read this book.
