A Broken Man

Title – A Broken Man
Author – Akash Verma
Genre – Fiction
Publisher – Srishti Publishers & Distributors
No of pages – 224

Main characters – Krishna, Chhavi, Ram Singh

The plot
It is a heart-wrenching love story of Krishna; a low caste boy belonged to Bihar and Chhavi, a Brahmin girl from Lucknow. It is a story of separation, patience, time and about rules set by the society. The story entirely revolves around the main characters in the novel called Krishna Kumar and Chhavi Mishra. It sheds a light on a Dailt boy’s life, where degradable comments and struggles are never ceased. Krishna is a broken man with broken expectations, lots of bitterness in him and struggling with his confidence and aims in his life. And there she comes with a light and guide in his life changing his entire life making him from broken man to a successful Dalit boy in his village. The story shows love is stronger than anything that can tear apart the differences set by people to people. It is a story to read and know the plight and struggles of being born in a low caste family.

My review
At first, you may think this is yet another love story served by the same old spice. However, as you progress from one page to another, you realize it talks about the plight of low caste, their never-ending struggles and how even loving someone belonged to upper caste has a price to pay. The author Akash Verma creates a perfect backdrop of Dalits where he let the readers know about this deprived section of the society. It starts from students’ politics in colleges and universities to real life love. Our society has created many differences and invisible layers to every field, be it education, job or love.

Krishna, a Dalit boy from Bihar has aspirations and passions to fulfill like others but his caste holds him back from everything. In order to earn name in the university like other upper caste people, he gets involved with wrong people. However, call it a destiny; he saves Chhavi from getting torched during a protest against reservation. Things get complicated when Krishna and Chhavi’s love blossoms after this incident only to be get crushed by the society.

When Chhavi’s father, a political leader learns about their love, Chhavi is forced to make a choice between love and society. The chapters of their love story get sadden as you read further.

At the end whether they get reunited or part their ways, you’ll have to figure out by your own. For that grab your copy as it is available on all leading online book stores.

Writing style
Author has beautifully taken support of Hindi poems to express and add more heart to his writing. However, the narration throughout the novel remains a bit slow.

What I liked?
The author has also used moral stories throughout the novel to pump up the energy in his readers. The short stories narrated by Chhavi provide inspiration and hope to the readers. I really liked the way author has used a mix of Hindi poems and short moral stories.

My suggestion
People who aren’t aware about the reservation politics and the hardships of low caste people must read this novel. It is just not a love story.

The moral
Chhavi’s character has shown very powerful. The novel teaches us no matter how difficult times you suffer from, always keep your head and hope high. Through Chhavi’s character the story has become stronger.

My rating
3.5/5
